In the Beginning Ans In the Beginnin

This landmark volume offers a profound investigation into the photographic foundations of Anselm Kiefer’s legendary artistic practice. While Kiefer is globally renowned for his colossal, textured paintings and monumental installations, this book reveals how the camera has served as his essential starting point and conceptual anchor since the late 1960s. By examining his early actions, his experimental darkroom techniques, and his integration of photographic prints into mixed-media canvases, the authors show how the medium is central to his exploration of German identity, myth, and collective memory.

What makes this publication so remarkable is its collaborative intellectual depth and visual richness. Featuring essays by prominent curators and art historians, it places Kiefer’s photographic works in direct dialogue with his broader oeuvre. The book captures his unique, tactile approach to the medium—subjecting prints to chemical baths, electrolysis, and physical distress. Readers are treated to a rare, intimate look at the artist’s private archives, showing how a single snapshot can evolve over decades into a towering masterpiece of lead, ash, and paint.

This book is a must-have for dedicated admirers of Anselm Kiefer, contemporary art historians, and anyone fascinated by the intersection of photography and painting. It serves as an inspiring resource for creative minds who want to understand how different media can bleed into one another to create a singular, hauntingly poetic vision of our world.
