Abstract Expressionism (Basic Art Series)

In the aftermath of the Second World War, a group of artists in New York City fundamentally redefined the possibilities of painting. Rather than representing the visible world, they sought to project raw emotion, existential anxiety, and absolute freedom directly onto monumental canvases. This elegant volume by Barbara Hess offers a concise yet comprehensive introduction to Abstract Expressionism, tracing its origins, its dramatic departure from European traditions, and its ultimate triumph as the first specifically American movement to achieve international influence.

What makes this Taschen Basic Art edition truly exceptional is how it balances accessible, authoritative art history with exquisite visual presentation. Hess guides readers through the diverse styles that defined the movement, from the kinetic, gestural drip paintings of Jackson Pollock to the serene, contemplative color fields of Mark Rothko. Each page is paired with crisp, high-fidelity reproductions that capture the texture, scale, and intense coloration of the original works, making the radical spirit of the era palpable.

This book is an indispensable guide for art history students, gallery visitors, and anyone captivated by the power of modern art. It serves as both a perfect starting point for those new to the movement and a beautiful reference for seasoned collectors. Anyone who appreciates how bold gestures and pure color can evoke profound human emotions will find this volume a deeply satisfying addition to their library.
