The Summer Guests

In the quiet seaside town of Purity, acting Police Chief Jo Thibodeau is prepared for the usual seasonal headaches of rowdy tourists. However, the summer takes a dark turn when a teenager goes missing near the lake, and a beloved resident becomes the prime suspect. To solve the case, Jo must reluctantly collaborate with the Martini Club—a close-knit group of retired intelligence operatives who have chosen this peaceful haven for their retirement. Led by Maggie Bird, these former spies must put aside their quiet routines of birdwatching to clear their friend’s name.

Tess Gerritsen delivers a masterfully paced narrative that balances the warmth of a cozy community mystery with the sharp edge of a classic spy thriller. The dry wit of the retired agents contrasts beautifully with the grounded, frustrated perspective of the local police chief. Gerritsen’s sharp dialogue and clever plotting ensure that the suspense remains high, while the coastal Maine setting provides an atmospheric backdrop for the unfolding drama.

This novel is perfect for readers who enjoy clever, character-driven mysteries featuring unconventional investigators. It will particularly appeal to fans of ensemble crime fiction who appreciate a blend of seasoned wisdom, humor, and intricate plotting.
