Harry Gruyaert: Between East and West

Harry Gruyaert is one of the great European photographers of the late twentieth century — a master of colour who spent decades photographing the points of contact between Eastern and Western visual cultures, finding in the markets, the light, the architectural details, and the faces of Morocco, India, Egypt, and the Soviet Union a chromatic intensity that transforms documentary photography into something approaching painting. Gruyaert was a member of Magnum Photos from 1981 and helped define the possibilities of colour photography in an era when many serious photographers still worked in black and white. His influence on contemporary photography has been enormous and is still growing.
