Key Philosophical Writings

This essential compilation brings together the most influential works of René Descartes, the thinker who laid the groundwork for modern Western philosophy. At the heart of this volume is his famous “Discourse on Method,” a text that challenged scholastic traditions and championed rational inquiry. Through these pages, readers can trace Descartes’ systematic journey of doubt, his search for undeniable truths, and his formulation of the mind-body relationship that still sparks debate today.

This edition is highly valued for its balance of comprehensiveness and accessibility. Translated by Elizabeth S. Haldane and G.R.T. Ross, with an insightful introduction by Enrique Chavez-Arvizo, it stands as a premier single-volume English selection. The translations preserve the rigorous logic and clarity of Descartes’ original arguments, allowing readers to experience the precise, analytical voice that altered the course of intellectual history.

This volume is perfect for students of philosophy, history, and science, as well as general readers eager to engage with the roots of rationalism. This Wordsworth edition offers an authoritative and affordable entry point into the thoughts of a giant of Western philosophy.
