The Complete Richard Hannay Stories (Wordsworth Classics)

This comprehensive Wordsworth edition gathers the complete adventures of Richard Hannay, John Buchan’s premier secret agent and the blueprint for the modern thriller hero. Spanning five classic novels, including the legendary espionage tale The Thirty-Nine Steps, this collection follows Hannay from the eve of the First World War through the global conflicts and conspiracies of the early twentieth century. Buchan’s masterful storytelling combines political intrigue, wilderness survival, and relentless suspense in a single, magnificent volume.

What makes this collection so remarkable is Buchan’s ability to ground high-stakes geopolitical drama in vivid, atmospheric landscapes. From the misty Scottish moors to the rugged terrain of South Africa, the setting becomes a living character. Written with a sharp, gentlemanly prose style, these stories established the “man on the run” trope and heavily influenced generations of thriller writers, most notably Alfred Hitchcock.

This volume is perfect for readers of classic espionage, historical adventure, and early twentieth-century British literature. It is an essential addition to the bookshelf of anyone who appreciates finely crafted suspense, vintage detective fiction, and the enduring charm of a classic gentleman hero facing extraordinary odds.
