The Federalist Papers

In the autumn of 1787, the new American constitution faced its greatest threat: ratification. Opponents argued that the proposed federal government would be a tyranny worse than the British king. To counter this, three of the republic’s greatest minds — Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay — wrote eighty-five essays in the space of a few months, under the collective pseudonym ‘Publius’, explaining and defending every clause of the document.

The Federalist Papers are now recognised as the most important documents in American constitutional history outside the Constitution itself — and as masterpieces of political reasoning. Madison’s essays on the extended republic, on faction, and on the separation of powers are particularly celebrated: they remain the most sophisticated defence of representative democracy ever written, and are still cited in Supreme Court decisions today.

More than two centuries after their composition, these essays speak directly to every debate about democratic governance, federal power, and the protection of individual rights.
