The Looking Glass and Other Stories

In this beautifully curated anthology, Anton Chekhov explores the delicate threshold between hope and reality. The title story opens on New Year’s Eve, where a young woman named Nellie peers into a mirror, only to see her future unfold in a series of vivid, shifting visions. What begins as a dreamy anticipation of married life quickly darkens into a poignant montage of domestic struggles, illness, and loss. Alongside this haunting masterpiece, the collection gathers a variety of Chekhov’s shorter works, each capturing the quiet, pivotal moments that define human existence.

What makes this edition so remarkable is Chekhov’s unparalleled ability to evoke immense emotional depth through the simplest of setups. His prose, translated with clarity and grace, balances light humor with a profound, almost devastating understanding of the human heart. The atmosphere of late nineteenth-century Russia is brought to life not through grand historical drama, but through the intimate, psychological landscapes of ordinary people facing their fears and desires.

This Alma Classics edition is an essential addition for anyone who appreciates the art of the short story. It is a wonderful gift for devoted lovers of classic literature, students of creative writing, and readers who enjoy introspective, atmospheric narratives that linger in the mind long after the final page is turned.
