Daido Moriyama has been photographing Tokyo — its streets, its surfaces, its lights, its faces, its dogs, its advertisements, its rain-slicked pavements and fluorescent interiors — for over fifty years, producing in that time one of the most sustained and most visually extraordinary engagements with a city in the history of photography. His images are grainy, high-contrast, deliberately degraded — and in that degradation they capture something about urban life that cleaner photography cannot reach: the blur of passing, the chance encounter, the city as an endless stream of surfaces that no single eye can contain.
